Just Got a New Camera?

With the advent of the dSLR, the landscape of photography has changed. Especially b/c of the dropping prices, everyone is getting in on the action. We definitely want to give you some food for thought through our posts and so we'll be discussing techniques and topics that range a whole lot just b/c we're interested in different aspects of photography.

But I know there are some guys - like a first year student at Berkeley - who just got a dSLR and has a ton of questions. And we don't want to re-invent the wheel when there are a whole lot of good resources out there already. So I thought I'd drop this simple primer.

For those interested in off-camera lighting, I'd like to point you to BootCamp II that Strobist is hosting. You definitely want to start on the Lighting101 and 102 before you dive into this one though.

  1. That primer looks pretty neat. Thanks John.

The Strobist blog looks interesting. If you had to sum up Strobist's strong points and why you like it, what would you say?

  2. One thing i think photographer's are always striving for is quality of light. flash gives it to you but it's uber-hard to learn how to use flash properly. Strobist shows you how to create light when there is none and how to manipulate the light that you do get.

Planet Neil does some great tutorials on how to use on-camera lighting. strobist is off-camera so a little different.

  3. ooh planet neil is where i learned my flash photography. i haven't really delved too deeply into strobist yet because off flash is not really in my arsenal yet (don't have the equipment for it yet; argh stuff like this makes me wanna switch over to nikon haha)

and yeah there are a lot of people picking up nowadays because of lowered costs

  4. i consider myself a newbie who just bought a camera in Oct last year. I haven't had the chance to look up any kind of articles/websites/books and i really wish i did. more than just being able to caputre an event for the sake of having it archived, i really want to be a real photographer.

thanks for these links and ref to planet neil. maybe i can commit 2 lunch breaks a week to reading up on photography... so much to learn!

  5. Yep, I echo Eileen's sentiments wishing I had more time to learn about photography since there is so much to learn! I think it would be informative to have the contributors post the gear they are currently using and maybe their current favorite lenses they like to use and why.
